During treatment, our Astanza ReSmooth laser emits a pulse of light energy that travels through the skin and targets the melanin in the hair follicle. The laser heats the follicle and destroys the root, successfully cutting off the hair’s nutrient source. Once the damage is done, the follicle cannot produce hair.
The reason why patients need multiple laser treatments to achieve complete hair removal is that laser hair removal is only effective during a specific growth stage. Hair grows in a cycle of three stages: the anagen phase, the catagen phase, and the telogen phase. The anagen phase, also known as the active growth stage, is the only stage that laser hair removal is effective in. The anagen phase is when the root of the hair is attached to the papilla. The catagen phase, also known as the transition phase, is when the hair follicle detaches from the papilla, cutting off the nurturing blood supply. The telogen phase, also known as the resting phase, is when the old hair sheds and new hair begins to form. Thus, starting the cycle all over again.
Because hair grows at different rates, it’s not possible to treat each hair during its anagen phase. That is why every patient needs multiple treatments.
